Math and Writing Extension                           Remedial Reading

What is remediation?

St. Patrick School offers remediation in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Services are provided in small group settings with emphasis placed on individualized instruction. Building the students’ self-esteem, creating a positive environment, and identifying individual learning styles can effectively build on a child’s existing strengths and weaknesses. A variety of innovative techniques and instructional tools are used including: computer software, Internet sites, games, manipulatives, and Newsday in Education.
Mrs. Bocchino works with students in the areas of reading, and Mrs. Ekis works with students in the areas of writing and mathematics. Miss Hansen and Ms. Sogluizzo are also devoting a portion of their school day to helping students in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.

Who is eligible?
The NYS Education Department has mandated schools to provide Academic Intervention Services for students who scored below a certain level on the English language arts, math, or science test. In addition, students who exhibit difficulty meeting academic expectations may be assessed more carefully to evaluate whether remedial services may be necessary.

Researched-Based Programs-

In accordance with The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), we have implemented three programs that are research based to better meet the needs of our students.  Professional Development for our teachers has been ongoing.

Horizons Reading Program:  "Horizons programs were designed in response to the reading needs of districts that have an average range of children and that recognize the need for careful reading instruction during the early grades:  Horizons programs are completely research-based, field-tested, and consistent with the latest research on phonological awareness, automaticity, metacognition, phonics, oral reading, and direct instruction" (10).   Mrs. Phyllis Frank and Mrs. Debbie Bocchino are our instructors.

Key Math Teach and Practice, the Operations Package, carefully paces and presents math skills to our students who are in need of remediation.  This program follows a research-based sequence:  It builds an understanding of concepts, it moves from the concrete to the abstract, and it varies practice and enrichment to help our students meet with success. Mrs. Ekis is our instructor.

Handwriting Without Tears™ is currently being used as our handwriting program in Pre-K through fifth grade.  The unique features of this program help make writing “an automatic and natural skill.”
